“I have travelled all over this watery world since being the featured cover artist of Arts Council of England’s The British Art Show (1984) and through my art I’ve met a lot of fantastic people. My music has also been a valid passport to new places and experiences through solo work and other collaborative ventures, such as being the singer/songwriter in The Three Johns. In the past five years, I’ve shown and performed in the UK, Australia, China, Japan, Portugal, Germany, Brazil, USA and India. My photographs of fairies have travelled even further as a global, viral phenomenon.
I was Head of Department of Fine Arts at Manchester School of Art from 1991 – 2002. I was made Professor in 1993 and in 2003 founded Manchester Institute for Research and Innovation in Art and Design, MIRIAD, now one of the top five research centres in the UK. I am its Director (click here to read my Guardian higher education profile).
I hope to inspire as I go. If I haven’t met you yet then maybe it is only a matter of time. In the meantime, you can enjoy my creations. They take many forms: paintings, songs, poems, novels, prints, public sculpture, photography, digital movies and rapid prototype sculptures.”
